Difference between SEO and Internet Marketing


 


Internet marketing involves the selling of the product and building reputation for both company and product, showing their products, services and the company itself in a good light, by advertising online using many different media like affiliates, social media, blogs, articles etc. SEO is what you do to a website to get it listed in a search engine. It forms the basis for internet marketing because its the first thing you do when you work with a clients’ website. SEO is mainly link building, keyword researching and optimizing a web page as well as setting out which keywords would be the most profitable in building links across the internet.


 


The SE in SEO stands for search engine. The search engines are a primary source for organic traffic but not the only source for traffic. There are a lot of sales pages to which Google hopes never to send traffic that still make sales.


A backlink is a signpost on the internet. While backlinks have traditionally been part of offsite SEO they also have the power to send direct traffic to your site. There are other methods of gaining traffic both online and offline that are unrelated to SEO.


In the offline sector signage with a link to a site have been used probably as long as there have been IM websites. Most print ads and TV ads include a web address. QR codes are gaining traction with the increased market penetration of smart phones.


Online there are several methods to gain traffic outside of SEO. Paid advertisements, including Adwords and banner advertising, are not strictly SEO but can generate very good traffic. Affiliate marketing can also be a source of significant traffic. If something posted on a site goes viral there can be massive traffic spikes.


Search engine traffic (generated by your SEO efforts) can be good or bad traffic. If you optimize the wrong words you may get a flood of information seekers but few conversions. What you need for success in IM is conversions. Some of the most successful Internet Marketers do not depend on search traffic to make their living, but are happy to accept the search traffic as gravy for their efforts. They do pay attention to SEO, but don’t depend on it to provide most of their traffic.
